Use a watermelon or large honeydew melon to create the “swan.” The melon that is removed can be used as part of the fruit salad.
Using a marker, draw pointed feathers around the middle of the rmelon. If you are artistic, you may be able to draw a neck and head on the melon freehand. If you don’t trust yourself to do it freehand, use brown paper or parchment to draw a neck and head – cut it out. Position the neck / head pattern on the melon and attache with pushpins or tape. Make sure the neck connects to the feathers.
Trace the pattern. Remove pattern and using a sharp paring knife, cut along the markings. Carefully remove the rind in small pieces. Hollow out the melon, reserving the pulp for melon balls.
Fill with fresh fruit salad.
Fresh Fruit with Grand Marnier and Rum|
Makes approximately 12 – 16servings
1/2 cup Grand Marnier or other orange flavored liqueur
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons white rum
1 pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into bite-sized pieces
2 pints of fresh blueberries or 4 cups of seedless grapes
2 pints of strawberries, hulled and cut in half
Combine the Grand Marnier, sugar and rum in a large bowl. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the pineapple and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for several hours
Add the remaining fruit and toss gently. Mound the fruit on a platter or in the prepared swan watermelon.
